Getting Started: DON'T BUY ANYTHING UNTIL YOU VISIT THE CLUB - WE CAN POINT YOU IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION |
Model car racing is an extremely accessable sport. The nature of the competitors is to welcome new racers and answer any questions that you may have. Some of the frequently asked questions are detailed below: |
About the cars: Generally, new racers are encourage to buy 2wd 1/10th scale electric buggies as this is the most popular class. The cars use a special battery similar to a laptop battery. These cars are not toys, and are robust and heavy duty in comparison to the toys that you may find in toy shops and model shops. However, if you already have a car, and want to give racing a go, please get in touch |
What does it cost?: A complete package including car kit, electronic speed controller, radio equipment, motor, battery and charger will cost €400 - €450. Good second hand equipment can cost less. |
Where to buy : There are a couple of specialist model shops in Ireland that have racing experience and "know their stuff", there are dozens of model shops pedalling spurious equipment that is no use to you on the track although sold as "expert equipment". Best thing to do is to visit one of our race meetings and talk to the traders that attend the meeting. |
What age group is this for? : Generally, this hobby appeals to all age groups. In the club, we have a mixture of children (from 12 years old) to adults (up to mid-60's). Any age competitor is very welcome, however we recommend that young children be accompanied by an adult until they are familiar with racing. |
When can I race? : Racing is held during the summer on Saturdays and on a mixture of Saturday and Sundays during the winter. Have a look at our CALENDAR page to see when the next event is on. Just turn up on the day and speak to anyone who looks involved. |
Who runs the race meeting?: The Dublin Model Car Club is run by annually elected volunteer officials. |
